OWNERS CATARAH COLEMAN & SHONEJI ROBISON’S STORY
Catarah Coleman and Shoneji Robison are “just two southern girls from Florida who love to bake”. Catarah and Shoneji both attended Florida A&M University but didn’t meet until they were introduced by a fellow sorority sister after relocating to Los Angeles to pursue their careers.
Shortly after the move, Catarah was missing some of the comforts of home and felt that Los Angeles needed a little touch of Southern hospitality and flair. A simple craving for Southern desserts sparked the idea to create what would become Southern Girl Desserts. Six months after the launch, Shoneji an actress with an equal love for baking, joined Catarah as a co-owner. Through this venture, the women experienced a lot and learned more than they could imagine about baking and business. Neither of them were classically trained in baking, yet like most of us, they learned everything they knew from their family members.
The pair have come a long way since their humble beginnings, they’ve won Food Network’s Cupcake Wars and have been featured as baking experts around the world on a host of nationally televised shows. Southern Girl Desserts has also gained a celebrity following; some of their most famous customers have included Denzel Washington, Earvin Magic Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson, Mariah Carey, Misty Copeland, Nick Cannon, Yvonne Orji, Stevie Wonder, and many more.
