Nyum Bai, Oakland
OWNER NITE YUN’S STORY
Nyum Bai was founded by Nite Yun with one clear vision in mind: to preserve and share Cambodian culture through food.
The idea came to Nite while eating at a small noodle stall in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In that moment, Nite realized that she needed to preserve and represent this beautiful culture that has experienced so much terror through years of war and genocide. She recreated her mother’s recipes from scratch and set out to introduce authentic Cambodian street food to the Bay Area.
Since its establishment in 2014, Nyum Bai has grown from its humble roots from catering gigs to pop-ups at Mission Pie, Golden Gate Donuts, and Temescal Brewing, to a food counter in the Emeryville Public Market. Nite wanted to recreate in each of these spaces, the sights, sounds, and tastes of Cambodia’s Golden Era. In February 2018, Nyum Bai opened its first, fully-fledged brick and mortar in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland.
